Listed below are some of the many proposals for the Yankee Stadium community by the NYC Department of City Planning. These initiatives will not only be beneficial to The Bronx, but to the rest of the City and the New York Yankees.
The plans are not simply about a stadium, but about creating a competitive urban place for sports, entertainment, education, parks, and business activity in the next booming borough, "The Bronx."
New Yankee Stadium
In April 2009, The Yankees will unveil its new 53,000 seat stadium. The new $800
million Yankee Stadium is one of the premier building projects to take
place in the Bronx in more than 50 years. The Yankees are working with
Cisco to create the most technologically advanced stadium in North
America, and possibly the world. The stadium will include wireless
Internet and 1,100 flat screen panels. The luxury and party suites will
include a Cisco IP telephone that will allow people to both order food
and direct the game’s action. Many of the luxury suite features may be
available to other fans via their mobile telephones in a few years.
Yankee Hall of Fame and Museum & Historic Yankee Field
The
Yankee Hall of Fame and Museum will contain exhibits that showcase the
rich history of the Yankees and will be housed in the old stadium. The
historic Yankee Stadium will be preserved and made accessible to the
public as a little league field, destination spot and a village green
for the community.
New Gateway Center Mall (picture to right)
Expected
to open in Fall 2009, the $500 million Gateway Center at the Bronx
Terminal Markets is one of the largest private sector investments in
the Bronx. The one million square feet mall will include both national
and local retailers, 2,600 parking spots, and possibly a hotel. The new
mall will house national retailers such as Home Depot, Target, Best Buy
and Bed Bath & Beyond. The Gateway Center will also include a
one-acre public park with an esplanade along the Harlem River.
Ferry Landing and Waterfront Park on the Harlem River
A
new ferry terminal, within walking distance of the stadium will
accommodate ferry and excursion boats from the Metropolitan area. The
landing will be adjacent to a new waterfront park featuring an inlet,
restaurants, and other commercial use.
New Metro-North Station and Subway Improvements
Located
in heart of the Yankee Neighborhood, this new rail station will enable
fans, local residents and hotel guests to take excursions to and from
the area. Two renovated subway stations serving the east and west sides
of Manhattan will be across the street from the hotel. The nearby 149th
Street and Grand Concourse subway station will also be renovated.
Pedestrian Overpass
The
construction of a pedestrian greenway network will connect the new
stadium with the Harlem River waterfront and the community. This will
include renovation of old pedestrian bridges, a new pedestrian bridge
and a promenade over the 161 street underpass.
